PRELIMINARY SPRITE LOG

The following is a very preliminary listing of the times of sprites imaged at the Yucca Ridge Field Station. These are based solely on real-time visual inspection of the video monitoring system. There are most likely some additional sprites not listed and not all those below may in fact be sprites. All times are UTC. Times are likely to be within ±5 seconds of actual time.

SUMMARY: Sprites over northern part of LMA from a long, linear MCS; Clouds Block Most events. High CAPES over High Plains along with northwest flow aloft creates complex linear MCS. Severe weather boxes, tops to 60,000 ft. System moved right through LMA as massive "bow echo" covering 3 states. Positive rates up at 20-30%. Heard many VLF signatures. But layer of middle layer clouds formed right in front of FOV after first half hour and blocked view! Did see about a dozen events in GEN III and 2 red Xybions. Took some VLF and PD samples. Excellent spider lightning evident. Too far to do much with GAI (200-300 km most of time). Mark has video of spider lightnings. See his email. Most events in the 150-250 km range of LMA Turn all cameras off at 0540Z as rains starts. STEPS over. LMA/interferometer runs.
