(UPDATED) SPRITE LOG JD 148 27 May 2000

The following is a listing of the times of sprites imaged at the Yucca Ridge Field Station. These are on visual inspection of the available. The list may not be totally comprehensive (some additional sprites or elves may still be found) but the times are generally definitive. All times are UTC. Times indicate the start of the 167 ms video field in which the event was first visible.

SUMMARY: Full Operations. Classic upscale development of small storms into an MCC which rode with a 500 mb short wave trough into high CAPE areas (>3500 j/kg). Storms formed in WY and NE and moved steadily eastward, grazing the LMA. Most development in CO were high based, with little local lighting and much less microburst activity than yesterday. Once NE system began, it had very high percent +CGs, which maintained itself at 50% or higher until past 06Z, as storm moved into Iowa and began to weaken. MCC had classic trailing stratiform secondary precip max, with +CGs, but many of the +CGs seemed to be associated with the convective core. Severe tstm watches in NE. Several warnings issued. Local clouds keeping moving in and out making continuous monitoring difficult until total clearing around 0600Z. Some dancers associated with multiple +CGs attach points in trailing stratiform. Front (outflow) came through YRFS just before midnight.

Much smoke in area. Many layers of smoke visible at sunset. Sky had red cast during night. Major forest fire plume coming out of Arizona visible on GOES. Reason to suspect the MCC was smoked contaminated. No moon.

Total TLEs from Yucca Ridge This Campaign: 51
