(UPDATED) SPRITE LOG
The following is a listing of the times of sprites imaged at the Yucca Ridge Field Station. These are on visual inspection of the available. The list may not be totally comprehensive (some additional sprites or elves may still be found) but the times are generally definitive. All times are UTC. Times indicate the start of the 167 ms video field in which the event was first visible. The number of fields and the field number of the brightest part of the event are given in brackets).
SUMMARY: Small MCS in NE Colorado produced clouds and rain showers which made viewing impossible. The lightning was on the western side of the LMA so color CCD videos (Sony and KY19) were made. Some good CG channels at 100+ km were obtained. A massive MCC developed in SE Colorado and the Panhandle area and moved NW into central Kansas after dark. NLDN rates were over 10,000/hr until after midnight. Positive percentages were modest (15% falling to 6% by 0800Z). the cloud shield was extremely large, covering portions of seven states. Between 0300-0700Z there were large areas of colder than –75C. The low clouds evaporated very rapidly just before 0600Z. Though a small storm cluster was present at 200 km and 105 deg, it was possible to view the sprites in the northwestern part of the MCC for about two hours before clouds moved back in. Some of the sprites were likely over the southeast part of the LMA. The moon rose at 0800, which, along with clouds, terminated observations.
