SUMMARY: MCS in SD Blocked By Clouds

TLE PREDICTION: 0.14 (0.2x0.7)

RESULTS: 0, think haze and clouds blocking sprites

LESSONS: clouds, haze and moon hinder veiwing!

PERSONNEL: Lyons, Nelson, Nordem, Gerken

STEPS STATUS: STEPS on standby.

YRFS OPERATION LOGS: Hot dry condition continue. An intense MCS developed in ND and rode the ridge southeast in northern SD. The storm had very high positive rates (>60%), hail, TVS and tops to 65000 ft. However at a range of 600-650 km, haze, full moon and then thin cirrus blowoff from the mountains blocked our view of the storm. Right after dark it seemed we had a clear line of sight, but saw almost no lightning, so we suspect that viewing was compromised. Shot TL only on GEN III. Have GEN III S-VHS. Recycled Xybion tapes. Stanford set up but saw nothing.
