SUMMARY: TLEs from Two Storm Types; Great Gravity Waves

TLE PREDICTION: 0.32 [0.4 x 0.80]

RESULTS: 25+ events from two storms GREAT GRAVITY WAVES

LESSONS: Good example of a supercell without TLEs-but many ICs

PERSONNEL: Lyons, Nelson, Fossum, Nordem, Gerken

STEPS STATUS: STEPS down.

YRFS OPERATION LOGS: Two major systems within view. The first was a weird linear MCS-squall line with tops to 650, hail, TVS and mesos which moved to the south-southwest from SE Nebraska into Northeast Kansas. Clouds cleared to allow us to watch this first,. It had a brief flurry of sprites around 0450 and then slow down and stopped. GEN III could easily see cloud flashes at 550 – 600 km. Major gravity waves seen in both GEN III and especially the USU imager. They looked like altocumulus clouds in the OH! (The imager was tilted off its axis and rather risk damage in a repair, we just left it).

Clouds finally cleared and we began to see some occasional sprites from a large slowly moving MCS in southeast CO that had rather high tops. The percent positive in both systems was rather low, so this may explain the rather low sprite production. As the CO system weakened, sprites stopped. Shut down at 0715Z.

GAI receiver arrives. No time to set up. Taylor and Gardner at Pingree Park.

STEPS OPERATIONS: STEPS shuts.

KEY RESULTS : have two rather distinct types of MCS, both with low positive rates and low TLE rates. Gravity waves evident from severe weather line but not large MCS.

Total TLEs from Yucca Ridge This Campaign: 900
